You’ll often hear people complaining about winter weight gain. With the advent of winter we tend to gain weight and when summer arrives we fail to shed those extra pounds. A few such pounds just stick around all the time and make us feel a bit heavier each year. It seems really difficult to get rid of those pounds gained. What causes this and what can be done to prevent this are discussed below.
There are several factors contributing to this. Firstly, your genetic disposition can be blamed for storing more fat during winter. It is quite common with some animals and is vital to our ancestor’s for their survival. These extra fat layers prevent us from cold and can further be used in the form of fuel during the late winters and also the early springs when the stocks of food tend to be low historically. We possibly have an inclination towards food more during the fall, when food can be abundantly found after the time of harvest, to enable the process to continue. We might also choose fatty foods during this time, almost unconsciously.
Our hormone levels are likely to have an influence over our body weight. The hormones and various other chemicals interact in the brain to produce increased cravings and appetite. The best possible way to deal wit this is by looking for alternative foods rich in carbs that gives the body everything that it craves for, but of course, it has to be low in fat and high in fiber. This means whole gram rice, cereals, fresh fruits, potatoes and wholegrain bread, but without butter.
Exercise is very important. Our physical activities tend to drop during winters and we prefer to stay back at home and take rest. That’s quite natural when it’s cold outside. But are we cavemen? We have heating equipments at home and come February, we’re also assured of the availability of food in all the stores. We need not put away the fat as they did. Go to a gym or just get a fixed bicycle for the nest. Transform all your carbs into sources of energy now rather than holding it right there on your waistline till the next season. Weight gain during winter can surely be avoided this way.
