If your dog is whimpering softly then, that means it is hurt or frightened. Generally, you can hear this sound, when the dog is in pain, especially when it is at the vet. Sometimes you can also hear it when the dog is scared, for example when you’re well trained and disciplined dog is left all alone in a strange place, it will start whimpering, telling you that it is scared and feeling lonely. This sound is something similar to the mewing sound, made by puppies when they are feeling hungry, in trouble or in cold.

When the dog wants something, it makes a kind of long drawn out and loud whining sound. There are a number of occasions when a puppy makes this kind of sound. He makes this kind of sound, while he is made to wait for his meal. Even when he wants the attention of his master or wants to put on his collar, he makes this sound.

If your dog is sighing, with his head down on the forepaws when he is lying down, then he means two things, one is, if his eyelids are not fully open, then he means to say, that he is very happy and planning to relax. But if his eyelids are open widely, he is trying to show his dissatisfaction, as what he expected has not come true. He actually means to say that he quits. This also depends on his facial expressions and the situation.

If your dog is baying then he means to say that he has to be followed that way, or he can even mean that he wants to attack. This kind of hounding sound is usually made when he is on a hunt.

If your dog feels very deserted or lonely and is looking for you, then he makes a typical yipping howl. But instead of a yipping howl, if he howls loudly, then he is saying that the space belongs to him or he is present there, or he has heard you calling or looking for him. If your dog is very confident then he will howl only once, to tell you that he is present there.

In case he is howling very often, from a different canine, then it is definitely a moan. This sound actually echoes to a human ear. If he moans for a very short time, then it means he is in a lot of excitement and wants to enjoy himself. He will generally moan, when something he expected has actually happened. If he is panting then he means to say that he is very happy and wants to go out.

Vocalization is also learnt by pets. For instance, the sound of the bark the dog gives when he responds to a command is completely different when compared to the sound of the bark he gives when he is impulsive. The barks to which the police dogs are trained also come under vocalization. Actually a lot of dogs can be trained to different sounds for different settings, right from the play growls, howls, moans, to very complex sounds like that of the sound of a yodel.

If you want to know more about the hounds he makes and what he is trying to convey to you in his language, like what he means by digging the back yard, then all you have to do is look out for resources locally or from the web. There are innumerable tips to take care of pets on websites dedicated for pets like the Hubpages, Squidoo and MySpace under the category of dogs.

You can even check with your regular librarian and order books on dogs, which you can refer later at your leisure.
